Isis was among the 8 swifts, Silvana and Kevin from the ornithological station in Trieste, Italy, brought us on August 18th, 2012. While her 7 fellows have already been released, Isis' extensive feather damage forced her to stay in the swift clinic.
Being rather at the bottom of a large list of juvenile swifts waiting for shifting, it became January 2013, when she finally received her new feathers.
To be able to fly with shifted feathers, the donor's figure and wing size has to match the receipient's. Veterinary Dr. Christiane Haupt carefully selected a candidate, prepared the feather set for Isis, and performed the surgery in the evening and night of January 21st.
In the following training sessions, Isis flew as if she never did anything else, and Dr. Haupt decided that she had to join the group that would be released on Fuerteventura. Isis successfully started on January 31st, and we wish her all the best for her new life in liberty.
