The First Patients of 2013
Friday, 26. April 2013 17:53
By: Christiane Haupt, Carolin Bühler (translation: Christopher Müller)

Season opener 2013: Jyoti from Rüsselsheim. (c) E. Brendel

The first patients arrived as early as never before: On April 25th, two swifts were brought as Patients 1 and 2 of 2013.

Jyoti from Rüsselsheim: Probably bitten by a cat in his right shoulder, heavy (49.8 g) Jyoti suffers from a soft tissue trauma. After cleaning the wound, Jyoti received antibiotics and pain killers. Now it will take him a couple of weeks to recover.

Why would a cat catch a common swift?

Maybe, the heavyweight bird chose a nesting site that is difficult to reach, and simply nosedived and crashed in attempt to land. Lying on the ground, he was an easy target for the cat.

Jaden from Frankfurt-Bornheim: A young mother and her son found him wounded in a street and transported him to the clinic right away. Jaden's left wing is blood crusted. Further examination and treatment or surgery requires anaesthesia, which cannot be given while the bird is still under shock. So Dr. Haupt decided to put on a protective bandage and wait until further examination is possible.
